Canterbury Bight

On Labour Day Monday 28th October our Operation Pahu Crew launched from Timaru. The Canterbury Bight has always been a place of interest for Sea Shepherd New Zealand. There is a high abundance of Pahu (Hectors Dolphins) and Timaru is the second largest fishing port in Australasia. Unfortunately the area also has a high number of reported Pahu deaths by commercial fishing. We also know that only a very small percentage of deaths are actually reported.
The Loki crew sighted over fifty Pahu between Port Timaru and the Orari River mouth 30km north. This included a very unique individual with distinctive white markings. Scientists from the University of Otago have advised the most likely cause of the white markings is skin growing back after injury.
